GCCA establishes a standard to ensure clear and proper product labeling for consumers

The Georgian Competition and Consumer Agency (GCCA) has established a violation in the natural juice production sector by identifying a case of unfair commercial practice committed by „Campa" LLC.

Following a detailed investigation, the Agency confirmed that Campa LLC misled consumers regarding the primary ingredients of one of its products, labeled as “100% Cherry and Pomegranate Juice”. The product’s front-facing label prominently implies that the juice is primarily composed of reconstituted cherry and pomegranate concentrates. However, a closer inspection of the back label-printed in small font-reveals that the product actually contains 80% apple juice concentrate, while cherry and pomegranate juices make up only 10% each.

The Georgian Law on the Protection of Consumer Rights upholds a high standard of transparency, ensuring that consumers are able to make informed decisions based on accurate and non-misleading information provided by traders.

Based on its assessment, the GCCA concluded that the level of consumer deception in this case was notably severe. The contradictory labeling presented by Campa LLC either misled or had the potential to mislead consumers regarding the true composition of the product.

Accordingly, the Agency has instructed Campa to revise the labeling of the product in full compliance with the applicable legal standards. The updated label must clearly and accurately reflect the actual composition of the product, eliminate any misleading elements, and provide complete and truthful information in the official language of Georgia, presented in a legible and comprehensible manner.
