The Georgian Competition and Consumer Agency (GCCA), in its capacity as the 2026-2027 Presidency of the International Consumer Protection and Enforcement Network (ICPEN), is hosting a high-level international conference in Tbilisi.
In his address, the Chairman of the Georgian Competition and Consumer Agency, Irakli Lekvinadze, addressed the delegates and wished them successful work ahead.
"I am pleased that, in 2026-2027, we hold the honour of leading a significant part of the Network's activities and of playing an active role in shaping the international cooperation agenda. "As you are aware, the conference's principal focus is to discuss the pressing challenges currently facing consumer protection, to share experience and best practice, and to establish more effective, unified approaches and standards in the field of enforcement. Ahead of us lie three demanding working days, offering every country together with its international partners and colleagues the opportunity not only to discuss existing challenges but also to begin work on concrete solutions and cooperation mechanisms. Our ultimate goal, shared by us all, remains the same: better-protected consumers”.
Around 100 delegates from 55 countries are taking part in the panel sessions, at which participants are examining the risks arising from the development of artificial intelligence, mechanisms for the protection of consumer rights in digital markets, the protection of children and young persons from harmful online commercial practices, so-called "dark patterns," influencer marketing, digital transparency and consumer trust. Particular attention is likewise being devoted to strengthening the institutional capacity of consumer protection agencies and to deepening inter-agency cooperation, as well as cooperation with non-governmental and civil society organisations, academic circles and other partners.
The Georgian Competition and Consumer Agency holds the ICPEN Presidency for 2026-2027, and the guiding message of the international conference under way in Tbilisi is "Building Trust in the Digital Age."
The main part of the programme will take place from 15 to 17 September and comprises thematic panel sessions, high-level meetings and closed working sessions.
On 17 September, an awards ceremony recognising innovative initiatives in the field of consumer protection is planned as part of the conference. In particular, the World Bank and ICPEN will identify innovative and effective consumer protection initiatives implemented worldwide, with awards to be presented by representatives of various countries.
