imedinews.ge: Aurelio La Torre - Amendments to Law of Georgia on Competition brings legislation closer to international standards

From November 4, international experts respond to the amendments to the Law of Georgia on Competition through the TV program- "Business on Imedi" and they highlight that the messages sent by these legislative amendments to Georgian companies, enterprises, and consumers reaffirms Georgia's commitment to establishing fair rules and leading to reducing the facts of the dominant position of the companies on the markets.

"These amendments will also prevent a situation, when companies agree and set a fixed price at a high level and hurt consumers. The current law brings the Georgian legal system closer to international standards. "It can make Georgia more attractive in terms of attracting foreign investment" – says the European expert, head of the EU project team, Aurelio La Torre.

Existed law contained several systemic and procedural shortcomings, the work on which lasted for three years. Following the new amendments, competition enforcement policy will become more effective and result-oriented.
As for the amendments in the institutional direction of competition policy, the initiating period for starting the work of the Competition Council determined a little later.

In 2020, the National Competition Agency completed five markets monitoring and three investigation processes in 1 of which the fact of abuse of a dominant position and 2 cases of unfair competition have revealed. One consent has been issued for the concentration of companies. At the moment, three cases are being investigated and three markets are being monitored.
