Consumers' complaints review will begin on November 1 by the Georgian National Competition Agency
Parliament of Georgia adopted the Law on “Protection of Consumer Rights” in the third reading. Consumer rights will be protected by the National Competition Agency on the territory of Georgia. The law will enter into force on June 1, 2022, and the review of complaints will begin on November 1.
The purpose of the law is to ensure a high degree of consumer protection in the country. It is part of the obligation of the Association Agreement between Georgia and the European Union. The law reflects the best international practice prepared in full compliance with the European directives and serves to improve the standard of protection of consumer rights.
In case of non-compliance with the instructions, a sanction of up to 2% of the previous year will be imposed. The Agency shall determine the admissibility of the complaint within ten days of its receipt and shall review it within one month. Next, the seller is sent a violation warning and given a deadline for its elimination by the Agency. If the instructions are not followed, a sanction, of up to 2% of the previous year's turnover, will be imposed.
Draft Law of Georgia on “Protection of Consumer Rights”, was developed ბased on the directives of the European Parliament and the Council, with the active involvement of the EU Integration Committee of the Parliament of Georgia, and with the assistance of the German Program for International Cooperation (GIZ). Representatives of various agencies, local and international experts, were also actively involved in the working process of the bill.
